Torrenegra Labs, and the people within the company, really like showing off some personality on our website. A difficult situation for young companies, however, can be trying to decide how to balance the enthusiastic, fun portrayal of their teams on their sites without coming across as so young that they can’t be taken seriously. It can be difficult to balance the notion of producing a dynamic image without overdoing it and jeopardizing a company’s professionalism.

Share Personality, Gain Trust

An important thing to consider is whom your site is geared toward, especially whether you are a B2C or B2B company. B2C companies have more flexibility. Marketing for these businesses is usually aspirational; therefore, you may want to showcase the aspects of the personalities of your team members that your customers may want to imitate. For example, are you selling ski items? Showcase how adventurous the members of your team are. Does your service revolve around reviewing books? Demonstrate how book-savvy the team is. Do this, while still showing personality details of the members of the team that make them look human, and people will feel like they know your group.

B2B marketing is trickier, as it is usually focused on trust, rather than aspiration. How can you get someone to trust you right from the get-go? With this type of marketing, you want to show the traits of the members of your team that will make others feel as if they can trust them, such as smiling faces, knowledge, stability, and long-term commitment. Like the B2C companies, you still want to make the team members look human, but you don’t want to emphasize anything that might make them look weak. Nobody likes to flaunt their own weaknesses!

Concerning Age and Experience for the Youth

Do you run a young company? That’s not a problem; everyone has to start somewhere. I wouldn’t lie about the age of the company. Instead, focus on how early the idea was formulated. It seems in today’s society, age is not a huge issue…for most people. The experiences that the company has had are what will count and provide the support needed.

Plus, there are bonuses to having a younger company. Many people perceive newer businesses as being more enthusiastic and motivated to compete in the marketplace – and not as complacent as their more experienced counterparts. Because of the flexibility young companies have, consumers can feel that their work is more innovative and forward-thinking.

Putting on glasses and wearing a tie for the photo shoot couldn’t hurt, though.

Culture, Youth, and Fun

Companies can really play up their cultures and young spirits on their websites in three basic (yet essential!) ways. First, create a cool team page. The best way to find an example of this is to visit the sites of organizations you admire. What makes you click with them in a personal way is what will make your visitors find your own company compelling.

Second, the overall message and copy of the website help. Introduce safe jokes in forms and automated emails. This can help the user feel that he’s talking to a friend when interacting with your website, and it can lend a more conversational vibe.

Third, establish a mascot! This is a great idea for marketing because it gives people something that can be associated back to the website. Each company needs a great “visual bookmark,” and this can be yours. Some great examples are Hipmunk (B2C), MailChimp (B2B), and of course, VoiceBunny.

There areveryfew industries where you would need to completely shy away from showcasing a fun personality, so this shouldn’t be a major concern. If your business is part of the funeral industry or you work with cadavers, amusing sites probably aren’t welcomed by your target audience. Everyone else should feel free to try to get their visitors to crack a smile.

In general, your marketing strategy needs to try to get people to react positively when they think of you. The brain records smiles and emotions, and this will help your brand positioning for years to come. Showcasing a fun personality is an easy way of garnering such smiles.

Is it time for a new union of voice artists?

The voiceover industry has dramatically changed during the previous decade. The unions, guilds, and associations that try to help voice talents have failed to keep with the changes, not just in new media, but also in their knowledge and acceptance of new markets and technologies. Is it time for a new union of voice artists?

First, some background:

Definition of guild: An association of people for mutual aid or the pursuit of a common goal.

And from Wikipedia:

The earliest types of guild were formed as confraternities of workers […] An important result of the guild framework was the emergence of universities at Bologna, Paris, and Oxford around the year 1200; they originated as guilds of students as at Bologna, or of masters as at Paris.

Many countries have one or more guilds for actors, each of them with their own history behind their need for being created. Whether it was for on-camera, theater, voiceover, or broadcast, there was a process in place that suited the ecosystem of casting directors, office buildings, production studios, agencies, breakdown services, managers etc. Union contracts assisted in providing the small group of individuals attempting this career with higher wages and benefits. There were defined standards, places to audition and perform, things you always do, and things you never say.

So what happened to these seemingly-simple glory days? Are they gone, and should we all run for the hills in panic? No.

On-camera and on-stage acting has not changed significantly. The process is almost the same today as it was decades ago. Voice acting, however, is very different today. Most voice talents have a home studio, the work of agents and casting directors has been automated by the likes of Voice123, SmartCast and VoiceBunny, and (whether they admit it or not) agents and casting directors use these services themselves. As a result, productivity levels have skyrocketed. A successful voice talent gets a new job every week. Today, a successful talent can get a new job online every hour, record it in minutes, and get paid in advance. It is what businesses have wanted for years, and what they demand today. Unfortunately, most acting unions have failed to respond to the needs and demands of current media, clinging to a crumbling structure that served a 20th century technology environment. Their contracts are outdated and technology moves much faster than their decision-making process, leaving voice actors scared and frustrated with those on the pulse of change, who have the background and experience to make significant positive changes. Given that the core of their members are on-camera and on-stage actors, they haven’t given enough attention to voice talents. Their pricing and payment contracts are just too slow, making them obsolete, and unrealistic. Trade unions are successful if they can convince buyers that the best professionals in the trade can only be hired by accepting the union rules. The Internet has made it easy for buyers to find great voice talent without having to go through the cumbersome processes of the unions. These associations must understand and adapt their methods to technology and innovation in order to remain competitive. In fact, many are unaware that in 2007, Voice123 did become union compatible and these associations still chose to not communicate with us. With no understanding of what we do, one union contacted several members of Voice123 last year to “warn” them about improper site usage. It became evident to voice talent at that time, that unions are very far behind today’s wiser and tech- savvy talent-market. We have gone as far as offering these associations/unions/guilds our technology for free. Their response has been painfully slow at best, and negative at worst.

The objective of an union, guild, or association is to obtain higher pay, better working conditions, and increase the number employees an employer hires. By shying away from technology and trying to maintain a union model that is outdated, these groups appear to be hiding the sun behind their hands.

Isn’t it time for a new guild of voice artists? Other countries have associations focused exclusively on radio artists (Asociación Colombiana de Locutores, Sociedad Argentina de Locutores, etc.). The US has the National Association of Broadcasters, but it encompasses all of broadcasting and is heavily focused on newscasters. Although this may be a step towards the right direction, such associations will need to encompass much more than radio, TV, and news which is only a tiny fraction of the voiceover industry. Change is nothing new to anyone. AFTRA was once AFRA, before television was invented, and now, there is a new frontier for work.

It is obvious that change is in demand, and you need not look further than all of the voice talent out there, who work their hardest to influence positive changes, whether it be it our own staff efforts with Voice the Dream, webinars on how to get work, Voice Artists United, World-Voices, and soon…VoiceBunny Guild. If you analyze what each of them do, and their missions, you can see they all share the same common threads, but with different faces, titles, and interpretations of how it should be done. However, history has shown divided parties that become inflexible will only break.

What do you think?

What Your Company’s Voice Means For Business

This article was originally published on Business 2 Community.

A company voice is more than just a spokesperson talking during a commercial; it’s what people hear when your company name crosses their mind. A singular voice for a company is vital to branding and brand recognition. A singular company voice lends a feeling of stability and consistency to your company. In turn, this encourages your clients to become repeat customers. People like to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing, and your singular voice is a great way to earn – and keep! – their confidence and business.

How your company voice can influence perception of the company

Companies usually want to create an emotional attachment between the brand and the client. You want someone to say, “I love this product/company!” This type of feeling and emotion can be gained, in part, by starting with a strong company voice. The emotion felt when listening to the voice of a company has a deep impact on the perception of the brand. Would you remember Dos Equis if it used a different voice? The voice of “The Most Interesting Man in the World” gives you a certain sense about the company. The marketing campaign with that voice has been received positively and consistently over the past few years. Consistency is key!

What sets the good voices apart from the bad

Humans can detect many subtleties in the voice of a person, which can trigger several different feelings. Humans can even determine whether a person was smiling or not, just by listening to his voice! A good voice is a combination of multiple things: engineering skills, a lack of background noise, constant volume levels, etc. For example, have you noticed that professional recordings usually don’t have the noise of the artist inhaling or exhaling? That’s because such noise is manually removed by professional voice over actors. They use skills such as speed, authoritativeness, and excitement to give more presence and believability to your company voice. A good voice over actor will learn about your brand, and the two of you will determine how they should read and act in your commercials, based on the perception you want people to have of your business.

How a company finds the right voice for its brand

Most of our clients don’t realize that this is a very subjective process. Fortunately for them, we do, and our voice over artists know as well. After millions of auditions, we have developed an instinct for what works – and doesn’t work – well. My suggestion is to post a project on VoiceBunny.com and let our voices show you how they think your brand should sound. The more voices and choices you have, the better idea you will have of exactly what you want. A fresh set of minds can only help you expand your field of choices and find the most authentic voice for your company.

Keep your voice consistent

Once you find your company voice, always use the same one! When that’s not possible, you can use services like Voice123 and VoiceBunny to find voices that sound similar. For example, Home Depot recently used VoiceBunny to find a voice that sounds similar to the voice used in their commercials. If voice is so important to a company the size of Home Depot, it should be of even more importance to a company trying to build its customer base and carve out its section of the marketplace. Your company voice is one of the very first impressions potential customers have of your company. You must focus your attention on finding what you want the voice to say, feel, and sound like. Find a voice and use it as long as you can. Build your customer base through trust and consistency, and you will build a business that ensures your voice is heard.

We're driving 10,000 miles on a barely-road-worthy car to help children of Bogota

As some of you may already know, I’m leaving soon for Mongolia to participate in the Mongol Rally 2012, a 10,000 mile charity rally form London, UK to Ulan Bataar, Mongolia.

Gone are the days of outsourcing. We’ve moved on to the era of crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing might be just the thing your business needs to save precious time and money. If your business requires a lot of previous knowledge about how your organization works, then crowdsourcing may not be for you. If, however, your business requires translating documents, determining whether a picture is “safe-for-work,” or adding some voice over talent for advertising, then your business may be ripe for a crowdsourcing makeover.

Here’s why:

Multiple people can be assigned to the same task and, if the website includes a little statistical analysis, determining the quality of work will be quick and painless.

For relatively subjective tasks like a 60-second voice over recording, multiple workers can perform the same task, allowing you to choose a “winner.”

Lastly, because the tasks are distributed across thousands of workers, fatigue and lack of motivation are not usually issues.

It’s All About the Savings

In addition to having thousands of workers at your disposal, you will save the most precious resource: your time. Saving time allows companies that are using crowdsourcing resources to be more competitive. Enabling yourself to be more competitive will enhance your ability to find your niche and target your ideal demographic more efficiently.

In the case of the voice over industry, before crowdsourcing, finding good talent for a 60-second recording took multiple weeks, one casting director, several talent agents, dozens of visits to recording studios, and around $4,000. Today, with “crowdvoicing,” the price is $40 and takes less than ten minutes, which is less than one-thousandth of the time and money it used to take!

One notable crowdsourcer is Adobe. Adobe crowdsources the transcription and translation of over 16,000 of their training videos and, because their audience is engaged, they don’t even have to pay. Their only investment is in the technology required to do so.

A Request for Proposal, Please

From a technical perspective, crowdsourcing is, in some instances, an automated request-for-proposal (RFP) system. You can argue that crowdsourcing is the RFP 2.0. If you need a logo or a voiceover, you can go to sites like 99designs or VoiceBunny and get dozens of artists to submit a proposal within minutes.

In some cases, the “proposal” submitted is the actual work that is ready to be delivered. This process is highly efficient, as it allows the buyer to save time and money, while at the same time allowing the artists to be more productive by submitting their work just once.

This type of crowdsourcing also has multiple benefits because, in addition to saving time and money, you’re also getting these services risk-free. In this model, you only pay the artist whose work you end up using.

The Short and Long Run

Crowdsourcing can also help you automate processes that would have been impossible to automate before. For example, myGengo allows you to automatically translate your content, while VoiceBunny allows you to automatically convert your online publication into a podcast.

By using crowdsourcing and keeping your business competitive, you may find that you’re getting more benefits than you ever thought possible. Crowdsourcing pays off in the short and the long run.

Endeavor Global is an organization that helps entrepreneurs unleash their potential by providing a network of seasoned business leaders. Endeavor Entrepreneurs get mentoring from members of the world’s top companies, educational and networking opportunities, and hands-on assistance with the most difficult challenges for startups.

We were invited to apply last year. The application process took hundreds of hours of paperwork, interviews, mentorships, and judging panels. Last week we flew to Cartagena, Colombia, for the Endeavor International Selection Panel (ISP). Finally, the last step of the process. We felt prepared and excited as tons of support and encouragement poured in, cheering us on. Sixteen companies were judged by an independent panel and after hours of deliberation, seven were rejected, including us. Honestly, it was heartbreaking. I failed at pitching my business properly. I let my team down, as well as the members of the Endeavor team that invested innumerable hours helping us. I’ve never dissapointed so many great people at once.

There is a positive side though: the experience was life changing. We got over a dozen VIPs (top-notch VCs and executives) analyzing every detail of our business. They criticized it and proposed improvements. We got raw, honest feedback— something quite uncommon since most VCs that don’t like your idea simply tell you “Interesting… we’ll get back to you”. We also met a lot of great people that want to help us.

Professionally speaking, I’m a new Alex today. Thanks to Endeavor, I’m now pitching better, hiring differently, executing faster, and more importantly, dreaming bigger. Or at least, I hope so.

The program is hosting delegations of Internet entrepreneurs interested on expanding to and even moving their business to NYC. It is a multiday program that includes networking events, visits to tech companies, meetups, workshops, and panels about law, immigration, and recruiting. It will happen August 6-8th (see brochure below).

I’m highly opinionated here: Silicon Valley is a great place to be as a tech entrepreneur, but NYC is a great place to be as a Latino (NYC is where salsa music was invented!). I’ve seen how the NYC startup scene has matured and continues to grow. I don’t want to run away. I want to stay here.

LatAm to NYC is the result of me helping Patricia promote a similar program called “World to NYC” a few months ago. To our surprise, almost half of the entrepreneurs that attended came from LatAm, many from Colombia! I told Patricia they should have one program focused on LatAm. Fast forward a couple of months and voila! Kudos to Mayor Bloomberg and Patricia for this effort!

For more information on how to apply, go to the program website.

P.S.
My first real “angel” investor was Tania. She didn’t invest money, though. She invested something far more valuable: She married me so that I could stay in the United States and continue growing my startup. Fast forward to the present, and my company now has over 50 team members, about half of whom are based in the U.S.

I’m Colombian by birth. I’m American by choice. Most nations are defined by race, language, or religion, but the United States is different. What sets the American nation apart is that it’s defined by the entrepreneurial spirit.

Until the 1920s, the U.S. used to welcome risk-takers. The further back in history we go, the riskier it was to immigrate, and risk-takers are, by nature, entrepreneurial.

During the previous century, though, populist, xenophobic politicians had gained enough support to shape our immigration policy the wrong way. Now, immigrating to the U.S. is almost impossible unless you are rich or have relatives here — and so foreign-born entrepreneurs are starting the next great companies elsewhere (and the U.S. is losing jobs as a result).

The Startup Visa movement, championed by the likes of lean startup guru Eric Ries and VCs Dave McClure and Fred Wilson, would enable non-American entrepreneurs with funding from a qualified U.S. investor to get a two-year visa to start a company.

The entrepreneurial community is loving the spirit behind the idea — myself included. Unfortunately, it would not have worked for me: I was a bootstrapper.

I founded my first business when I was 14. When I was 19, I came to the U.S. as a tourist, and I loved it here so much that I decided to stay. I wanted to remain in the U.S. legally, so I was forced to switch back and forth between tourist and student visas — a difficult and time-consuming hassle.

When this was no longer an option, I did explore some illegal avenues. (If you are interested, go to a Latin bakery and ask for a green card. If you end up in the correct one, you may be surprised with the “menu.”)

I did manage to bootstrap my first tech startup in the meantime. Within a year, we were profitable; within three years, we already had seven employees in the U.S.

Then 9/11 happened and the switching-visas game was over. I had to go back to Colombia, where most visa requests were being denied. I was afraid I would never be able to come back to the U.S.

Fortunately, though, I had met Tania a few months earlier. And, as you know, I got lucky.

Most foreign-born entrepreneurs I’ve met are very eager to stay here; the startup environment in the U.S. allows for the execution of ideas that would be very difficult anywhere else. Setting up a business is easy, investment regulation is friendly, job laws don’t punish startups, and risk and failure are socially accepted. No other country in the world has such a rich mix of elements. As such, I’m a happy taxpayer and I want the best for this country.

Yet the U.S. is losing its competitiveness every day. The internet, the same tool that allowed founders in this country to cultivate companies like Google, is also allowing the rest of the world to learn — to learn a lot, and learn it fast. Such knowledge is allowing anyone with passion to launch startups from anywhere in the world. And by making it difficult for these entrepreneurs to immigrate, the U.S. is losing out on thenew jobs and tax revenues generated by homegrown startups to other nations.

Entrepreneurs won’t steal jobs or live on welfare. Instead, they will come here to grow a business, create jobs and pay taxes. (California is about to get $2.5 billion in tax revenue with the IPO of Facebook alone.)The future of the U.S. is at stake, and shouldn’t be dependent on luck. We need to make it easier for entrepreneurs to become part of our nation. The benefits far outweigh the risks.

Startup Visa is trying to rekindle the spirit of entrepreneurship that America was founded upon, but it has some glaring imperfections. For one, it doesn’t have clear provisions for bootstrapping-but-profitable entrepreneurs like me — yet we’re vital to the entrepreneurship ecosystem, especially in the tech space.

Additionally, it requires the entrepreneur to be successful with his funded startup in order to remain in the U.S. Most startups fail — even those founded by veteran entrepreneurs — so I propose that a better solution is to allow “failing” entrepreneurs to stay for a few more years so that they can try once again, after having learned from their mistakes. Similar to how foreign students that recently graduated are granted some time to find a job and perhaps stay in the U.S., a “failing” entrepreneur could be granted a few years to start a second business.

Startup Visa may not be perfect, but it’s a needed first step toward the kind of immigration reform that will help pull the U.S. up by its bootstraps (pun intended) to again become the nation of hardworking entrepreneurs and explorers that its founders envisioned over 200 years ago.

When children beg for money on the streets

When children beg for money on the streets:

Case and point: the listings of the Merrcury Engine (for example: http://nacho.letmego.com/). We wanted visitors to be able to send a message to the hosts without having to leave the listing. We did this via modal windows that use AJAX. Sounds good in theory, but terrible in practice. Here are the challenges we came across:

Modals don’t work properly in mobile browsers.

They are bad for SEO, as they add a lot of Javascript to the code.

If you are not signed in, we have to ask you to leave the listing anyway, so that you can sign in or sign up.

In order to circumvent the issues above, we ended up making the code dynamic, which in turn gave us a lot of headaches when setting up a caching mechanism for the listings.

The solution? Get rid of modals windows and AJAX. Starting next week travellers will be shown a new page when they decide to contact the hosts. All problems above get solved by this. In fact, today I’m QAing this simplification, coded by @tufla, in our dev servers.

I'm starting an experimental log of my work

Today I will start an experimental log of my work.
